COMMONWEALTH BOXING COUNCIL BULLETIN
JANUARY 2021
Firstly, please let me wish each and everyone of you a Happy New Year, I am sure can all agree that
we were pleased to see the back of 2020, a year that was challenging to say the least. 2021 has
begun without much more to celebrate but I like to think we can see a light at the end of the tunnel
this year with vaccinations effectively being rolled out across the globe, lets hope we can start to
return to a new normal, however that will look.
The Commonwealth Championship Boxing begins the year with Championships and Eliminators
planned, there is no doubt Promoters are up against it in being able to stage tournaments with no or
little crowd and in such turbulent conditions – we salute you for your efforts in ensuring Boxers are
being kept active where it is possible.

SPRING MEETING
The Commonwealth Boxing Council would normally now be planning for their Spring AGM, it is still
unsure as to whether Directors will be able to meet in person and so when plans are made these
details will be made available on our website www.commbc.com, a decision is likely to be made by
end of February 2021.
WORLD BOXING COUNCIL – BRIDGER WEIGHT
You may well already know that the World Boxing Council, to which the CBC is affiliated, has now
introduced a new weight division between Cruiserweight and Heavyweight, which has been named
the BRIDGERWEIGHT division.
This new weight division will apply for boxers weighing between 200 lbs (90.72k) and 224lbs
(101.6k).
The WBC has already approved matches for Eliminators and a Silver Championship in this weight
division and has compiled the first set of ratings.
This new weight division has been introduced, given health and safety concerns about the potential
weight disparity between a boxer weighing above 200lbs but unable to reduce safely to that
maximum weight limit, and some of the bigger Heavyweights eg Tyson Fury at 273lbs and Anthony
Joshua at 240 ¾ lbs in their last contests.
The Commonwealth Boxing Council has no immediate plans to follow suit but will almost certainly
have the obligation to consider that possibility during 2021 when it next becomes possible to hold an
Annual General Meeting.
MEANWHILE, SHOULD THERE BE ANY CURRENT OR POTENTIALLY WORLD-RANKED
COMMONWEALTH BOXER WHO WISHES TO BE CONSIDERED BY THE WBC FOR INCLUSION IN THEIR
NEXT SET OF RATINGS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE SO THAT WE MAY INFORM
THEM OF YOUR INTEREST AND WHERE THERE ARE SOLID GROUNDS FOR INCLUSION, CONVEY
REASONS IF NECESSARY, ON YOUR BEHALF.
FINAL MESSAGE
Until my next Bulletin may you and your loved ones stay safe and keep well – better times are
coming !!!
