Since 1954, the Commonwealth Boxing Council in its various forms has regulated and sanctioned Commonwealth Championships.

Future world champions like Hogan Kid Bassey of Nigeria through to Lennox Lewis, Tyson Fury, and Anthony Joshua of England. National heroes like Ghana’s Floyd Robertson of Ghana through to Sir Henry Cooper of England to Australia’s Paul Ferrari and Modest Napunyi of Kenya. All have held our prestigious championship, a gateway to top international class. Formed that year by the British Boxing Board of Control as ‘The Empire and Commonwealth Championships Committee’ the body was intended to bring regulation and stability to what was then known as ‘Empire’ Championships, which had been fought for for more than half a century beforehand. Re-organized again in 1972 as the ‘Commonwealth Championships Committee’, the CBC was eventually incorporated as a separate entity from the BBB of C in 1997 as limited liability, ‘not for profit’ company, registered under the laws of England and Wales. Member federations are established licensing and regulatory, and/or national championship sanctioning authorities and each member federation appoints a director, who is then registered with Companies House in Cardiff, to represent to represent boxers and promoters from their country and to make decisions about Commonwealth Championships and the running of the company Ltd.

Day to day running of the company is delegated to the Hon. Secretary and the Assistant Secretary, upon whom is conferred substantial authority as well as responsibility.

Meetings are held twice yearly, in the spring in the form of a sub-committee to ensure a review of progress, and in the autumn or winter in the form of the annual general meeting. These are usually held in the headquarters of the Commonwealth Secretariat at Marlborough House in London’s Pall Mall, but exceptionally have taken place in Nairobi, Kenya in 2001, Accra, Ghana in 2004 and the Bahamas High Commission in London in 2009.

Since 2014, the CBC has been recognized by the Commonwealth Secretariat as an accredited Commonwealth civil society.

The CBC also provides a forum for discussion and mutually beneficial inter-action between the various national boxing federations that make up the membership and is one of the most respected championship organizations in the world today.
