COMMONWEALTH BOXING COUNCIL BULLETIN 17th May 2017
A sub-committee of the CBC met at Marlborough House in London’s Pall Mall to review CBC matters since the December 2016 AGM.
A list of current Champions, approved contenders and defence requirements can be found in the accompanying documentation.
After a lull in Championship contests at the end of 2016, beginning of 2017 we’ve seen a resurgence in activity since our Bulletin of 21st February (see RESULTS) featuring boxers from CAMEROON, AUSTRALIA, ENGLAND, SCOTLAND, GHANA, WALES, SOUTH AFRICA and NIGERIA with further contests scheduled between now and the end of July (see FORTHCOMING CHAMPIONSHIPS). These include the long awaited Heavyweight Championship between LENROY THOMAS of Jamaica and DAVID ALLEN of England, a contest, in the making since last Summer, which has been scheduled for Toronto then Nassau, finally, Sheffield, and which has variously included at times boxers from Canada, Scotland and the Bahamas.
The Title has been vacant since last April when former Champion ANTHONY JOSHUA won the IBF World Title. With his win last month over Wladimir Klitschko, surely a contender for anyone’s ‘Fight of the Year, Anthony, is probably our most successful former Champion since CARL FROCH, or arguably CARL FRAMPTON, but with a bevy of former Commonwealth Champions holding or having recently held, one or more of the ‘big four’ World Championships, the reputation of our Championships as being the gateway to World success is firmly established.
With our Women’s Featherweight Champion, SARAH PUCEK of Canada currently negotiating for a defence and with the possibility of Olympic Champion NICOLA ADAMS of England boxing for our Title before too long, we are hoping to see some more activity on this side of the sport as well.
