The Commonwealth Boxing Council is delighted to congratulate Omarah Taylor on becoming the new Commonwealth Welterweight Champion, marking another significant milestone in the career of one of Britain’s most accomplished female boxers.
Taylor captured the vacant Commonwealth crown following a disciplined and impressive performance, earning the biggest victory of her professional career and adding her name to the proud lineage of Commonwealth Welterweight Champions.
A former member of the GB Boxing programme, Taylor took an unconventional route into the sport after being identified through UK Sport’s Discover Your Gold initiative following the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. She went on to enjoy a successful amateur career, competing internationally and reaching the latter stages of the National Championships before making the transition to the professional ranks in December 2023.
Since turning professional, the Birmingham boxer has quickly established herself as one of the country’s most promising welterweights. Entering the championship bout unbeaten, Taylor had already demonstrated her ability to box with composure and authority while also showing the power to secure stoppage victories when opportunities arose.
