The Commonwealth Boxing Council congratulates Callum Simpson on reclaiming the Commonwealth Super-Middleweight Championship following a hard-fought unanimous decision victory over Troy Williamson.
Meeting for a second time after Williamson handed Simpson the only defeat of his professional career last December, the two English rivals produced another memorable contest. After twelve competitive rounds, the judges scored the bout 116-112, 117-112 and 115-113 in Simpson’s favour, crowning him once again as Commonwealth champion.
The contest showcased the high standard of competition associated with Commonwealth title boxing. Simpson made a strong start, hurting Williamson with a right hand in the third round, while the defending champion responded with determined resistance throughout, enjoying success of his own during the later rounds and finishing the fight strongly in pursuit of a stoppage.
Despite Williamson’s spirited effort, Simpson maintained his composure over the championship distance to secure victory and improve his professional record to 19 wins and one defeat.
Speaking after the contest, Simpson reflected on the significance of regaining the title.
“It feels amazing. Troy is a tough fighter and deserved every bit of confidence after the first fight. I’ve learned from that experience, come back stronger, and knew I was going to get the win.”
Williamson deserves immense credit for his championship reign and for once again producing an entertaining contest that highlighted the qualities expected of Commonwealth titleholders. His determination and resilience ensured another outstanding battle between two of Britain’s leading super-middleweights.
