Ayton & Sains Crowned Commonwealth Champions in London
Two new Commonwealth champions were crowned at the Copper Box Arena in London on Saturday night, as Tiah Mai Ayton and Jimmy Sains both claimed vacant Commonwealth titles on the Matchroom Boxing card, broadcast live on DAZN.
Twenty-year-old Tiah Mai Ayton continued her impressive rise through the professional ranks with a dominant victory over Ellie Hellewell to capture the Commonwealth Featherweight Championship. Ayton applied the pressure throughout and increasingly took control of the contest, hurting Hellewell during a strong fifth round before her opponent’s corner withdrew her following the sixth. The victory moves Ayton to 7-0 with six stoppages and earns her the first professional title of her career.
Later in the evening, unbeaten middleweight Jimmy Sains defeated Tom Cowling over twelve rounds to become the new Commonwealth Middleweight Champion. Sains controlled much of the contest with his work rate and went the championship distance for the first time in his professional career, earning a unanimous decision to keep his unbeaten record intact.
It was a memorable night for the Commonwealth Boxing Council, with two exciting unbeaten British fighters adding Commonwealth honours to their records and taking another significant step forward in their careers.
